Pillow Fill Materials Information
There are an enormous range of pillow fillmaterials available. The following is a guide to the most popular fill materials used in Australia.
- Polyester is a stable synthetic material and is very durable, UV resistant and is cost effective. The fibre can be 'crimped' to ensure that fibres do not 'nest' and flatten out to reduce the 'loft' and resilience of the pillow.
Crestell® uses a unique blend of conjugate fibres which retain the crimp over the life of the pillow, and which makes the fill act like thousands of tiny springs to provide a longer lasting loft and 'bounce-back' resilience to cushion and support your head and neck.
Polyester is naturally resistant to microbial attack and can be treated to kill dust-mites and other microbial infestations.
Crestell® also offers a microfibre polyester for superior softness and luxuriousness and a down-like feel.
- Wool is an organic alternative fibre to Polyester. Wool fibres naturally grow in a 3 dimensional corkscrew pattern, or 'helical coil'. These coiled springs of wool contribute to the fibre's natural resilience and softness.
Wool molds to the shape of the head and neck, offering all over support and excellent moisture management properties allowing the fill to breathe for comfort and a better night's sleep.
Wool naturally inhibits bacteria and dust mites, is hypoallergenic and flame resistant.
Crestell® uses only the highest quality wool in its products.
- Down is the undercoating of waterfowl (goose, duck or swan) and consists of light, fluffy filaments growing in three dimensions from a central quill point. Feathers are a 2 dimensional form of down and are often blended with down for bulk and to reduce the cost of the pillow.
The popularity of feather and down stems from its light weight, compressibility, recovery power, resilience and breathability.
Crestell® feather and down pillows are treated with antimicrobial protection for added safety.
Crestell® offers a microfibre polyester for superior softness and luxuriousness and a down-like feel and is a lower cost alternative which is also hypoallergenic.
- Polyurethane (PU) foam is a synthetic material, and can be supplied in various densities and hardness, and can be profile cut into different shapes to support the head and neck.
Crestell® has developed a Fibre Core® made from 100% bonded fibre to replace PU foam in its pillows which makes them machine washable.
Crestell®'s Fibre Core® is wrapped in polyester or wool to give extra resilience to those who prefer this type of pillow.
The use of Fibre Core® wrapped in fibre combines resilience and firmness of foam for support with the softness of fibre for extra comfort.
- Latex is a naturally occurring material foamed through the introduction of millions of tiny air bubbles to create a very resilient and comfortable pillow material which also breathes. In comparison to PU foam pillows, latex retains its resilience over a much longer period and is cooler to sleep on as it retains less heat.
Crestell® Latex pillows are antimicrobial, naturally hypoallergenic, dust-mite resistant and mould and mildew resistant.
- Visco-Elastic (Memory) Foam is a material originally engineered by NASA to make astronauts more comfortable during space launch. Visco-Elastic foams are made up of billions of spherical open cells that temperature and weight sensitive, and able to conform to the individual size and shape of your head and neck.
This even support encourages circulation during sleep making it easier and sometimes preferable to sleep in the same position for house at a time.
Crestell® offers a selected range of foam pillows to complement its fibre and feather and down pillow products.
